Understanding Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is a concept that recognizes differences in brain function and behavioral traits among people as part of the natural variation in the human species. This term can apply to a range of conditions that impact how the brain and nervous system works, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), sensory processing disorder (SPD), bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and other conditions. The concept of neurodiversity suggests that just as biodiversity is essential to ecosystems, the diversity or differences in human minds are crucial to society. This concept includes two general categories:

Neurotypical: Individuals whose neurological development and functioning are consistent with what society considers standard or typical.

Neurodivergent: Individuals whose brain functioning is more unique and different from societal standards of "typical."

At Paws and Progress, I consciously use the term "neurodiversity," as it embodies a philosophy of inclusivity and appreciation for differences in human brains and behaviors.

Neurodiversity is not a medical term, but it offers a broader and more holistic perspective, recognizing that every person has a unique way of thinking and interacting with the world. There are several reasons why this terminology is embraced at Paws and Progress:

•    Celebrating Differences: Neurodiversity acknowledges that differences in neurological conditions are not deficits but variations that should be respected, celebrated, and worked with. By using this term, the medical community can move away from a problem-focused view of conditions and move toward a strengths-based approach.

•    Promoting Inclusivity: Using the term “neurodiversity” is a way to foster an inclusive environment. It sends the message that Paws and Progress supports and values all forms of differences. Neurodiversity empowers individuals by affirming their right to be different and encouraging self-acceptance.

•    Reducing Stigma: The medical model has historically pathologized neurological differences, which can lead to stigma and discrimination. The term “neurodiversity” helps to counteract this by emphasizing that differences in brain functioning are a natural and valuable part of the human species.

•    Emphasizing Individuality: OT at Paws and Progress is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and the individuality of each client is celebrated. Strategies are tailored to each client’s unique profile, honoring their strengths and challenges.

•    Supporting Holistic Well-being: Neurodiversity aligns with my holistic approach to well-being by understanding that psychological, social, and emotional factors are intertwined with neurological aspects.

•    Reflecting Current Perspectives: As society progresses in its understanding of individual differences, so does our language and approach. Embracing neurodiversity reflects current, progressive perspectives on human diversity and potential.
