Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational therapy (OT) is a science-driven, evidence-based profession that enables people of all ages to participate in daily living or live better with injury, illness, or disability. This is accomplished through acquiring new skills, implementing strategies or modifications for daily life, and customizing environments to maximize potential. Occupational therapists assess and address physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional challenges that may hinder an individual's ability to engage in meaningful activities. By taking the whole picture into account, occupational therapists can assist people in:

  • Achieving their personal goals

  • Staying healthy and productive while functioning at the highest possible level

  • Maintaining or rebuilding a person’s independence

  • Participating in the daily activities or occupations that make life worth living

Life is made up of occupations, yet we generally don’t think about our daily occupations until we have trouble doing them. Occupations are meaningful, everyday activities that include many roles, such as being a parent, friend, spouse, student, artist, cook, athlete, or pet owner. Everyone has occupations— from toddlers whose occupations are playing and developing essential skills to adults whose occupations are engaging with family and friends and managing their homes. In short, an occupational therapist can help you live life fully, regardless of your health condition, disability, or risk factors. Paws and Progress’ specialized OT services are tailored to meet each client's unique needs. At Paws and Progress, I offer:

Occupational therapy is designed to help individuals of all ages overcome barriers that restrict their ability to function effectively and enjoy life fully. An OT evaluation can offer valuable insights and strategies to support growth and development. The aim of OT is not to change the person but to empower them to navigate their world confidently, improve their quality of life, and embrace every opportunity for joy, learning, and personal growth.

Success with OT

Paws and Progress celebrates every stride made for both children and adults. This spans across a spectrum of unique journeys – from pediatric milestones to neurodivergent adults finding their rhythm in daily life. Occupational therapy can be incredibly beneficial for many people, but success with this therapeutic approach often depends on specific personal/family dynamics, attitudes, and characteristics. Some key traits that typically lead to fruitful outcomes in OT include

  • Openness to Learning: Individuals eager to learn skills and incorporate new strategies into their daily routines often see the most progress.

  • Team Approach: Success is often achieved through a willingness to work as a team. A collaborative spirit between clients, families, and OT professionals fosters shared insights and effective interventions.

  • Consistency: Regularly practicing skills and routines at home can reinforce the gains made during OT sessions. Commitment to the therapy process, including attendance and follow-through, is crucial for success.

  • Patience and Positivity: Progress in OT can sometimes be gradual. It is essential to approach OT with patience and a positive outlook.

  • Flexibility: Being open to adjusting methods or perspectives when faced with challenges and obstacles is essential for progress.

  • Communication: Clear and consistent communication between clients, parents/caregivers, and the OT ensures the approach is dynamic and responsive. Communication is essential to ensure that therapy aligns with clients’ evolving needs.

OT might be a great fit for you or your child if these characteristics resonate with your approach to challenges and learning. For children and adolescents, success with OT might manifest as newfound confidence, such as a client who has mastered the zippers on their backpack or in the joyful expression of a little one engaging in play without sensory overload. For neurodivergent adults, success in OT can be seen in someone who has skillfully learned to navigate the nuances of workplace interactions or has established a personal organization system that turns chaos into clarity.

Paws and Progress implements a deeply personalized approach, and success looks different for everyone. OT is about harnessing each client’s strengths and building upon them to create a toolkit for success in everyday challenges. Paws and Progress aims to guide every client toward achieving their version of success by considering the whole person, their environment, and their goals.
